Dr. Foster's Education and Training
Joel Foster, DPM, earned his undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Kansas and received his doctoral degree from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. He completed his surgical training at the Medical Center of Independence, which included forefoot and rearfoot reconstruction, nerve surgery, diabetic wound care and limb salvage, peripheral vascular disease, and sports medicine.
Dr. Joel Foster is one of Kansas City's most accomplished and experienced minimally invasive foot and ankle surgeons. He is the only doctor in the region who is board-certified in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery. He has performed thousands of minimally invasive foot and ankle procedures and has been performing minimally invasive surgery for 18 years.
As a Fellow with the Academy of Minimally Invasive Foot and Ankle Surgery, Dr. Foster attends yearly academic and cadaver training seminars to both teach and continue to learn from minimally invasive foot and ankle surgeons from around the world. Dr. Foster is also one of few foot and ankle surgeons in the nation that is double board certified by both the ABMPS as well as the ABFAS.
Along with being certified in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery by the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry, Dr. Joel Foster is also board-certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is also a fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and a qualified associate of the Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons. As a specialized doctor of podiatric medicine, he specializes in treating all foot and ankle-related conditions and is committed to providing the best care possible for his patients.
Personal
Dr. Foster and his wife, Michala, have been married for 27 years and have three children.
A former competitive rugby player in college with the University of Kansas Rugby Club, Dr. Foster still maintains an active lifestyle. Whenever he is able, Dr. Foster enjoys hiking, sailing, scuba diving, snowboarding, running, and traveling with his wife and children. As a colon cancer survivor, Dr. Foster cherishes every minute he can spend enjoying the outdoors with his family. On the bicycle, Dr. Foster and his wife ride regularly and have completed the 235-mile Katy Trail bike ride across the state of Missouri. He and his wife have also done several Colorado mountain hikes. They have taken on the Manitou Incline and even conquered Mt. Bierstadt, their first fourteen-thousand-foot peak. As a regular runner, Dr. Foster and his wife and children have run several 5K races. He and his daughter Hannah have also run 10K races, half marathons and even ran their first full marathon in June of 2024.
While he is not as daring as he used to be on a snowboard, Dr. Foster still enjoys trying to keep up with his kids and their friends on the slopes. Dr. Foster and his wife also enjoy sailing and are certified sailors with the American Sailing Association. Dr. Foster and his daughter also received their PADI certification in scuba diving and did their first ocean dive in 2024.
