Do I Really Need Orthotics or Bracing?
Orthotics, braces, and other shoe inserts or wearable devices are often among the least invasive and most effective treatment options for a wide range of conditions. However, every case is different and only a professional can help you determine whether orthotics might be right for you—and if so, which type would be most appropriate. For example, some people with low arches might be best served by an orthotic, while for others we might recommend a surgical procedure such as HyProCure.
Aren't Store-Bought Inserts Good Enough?
In most cases, no. While a store-bought orthotic, insert, or brace may provide some relief, the effects are often insufficient or temporary. You’re much better off getting evaluated and fitted by a specialist who understands foot and ankle biomechanics inside and out.
Won't They Be Expensive?
Not necessarily! In fact, a lot of people are shocked when they find out we can offer them a better product for less money than many of the alternatives. A prefabricated orthotic heat-molded in our office covers many of the benefits of a fully custom orthotic and only costs $60. Custom orthotics will be a bit more expensive up front, of course, but they also tend to work the best and last much longer, especially with care and maintenance.
Can I Use the Same Pair of Orthotics in Different Shoes?
Usually, orthotics will transfer easily between shoes of a similar type. You may or may not be able to use the same pair with different types of shoes (for example, from athletic to dress shoes).
How Often Will My Orthotics Need to Be Replaced?
The expected lifetime of your orthotics will depend on the materials they’re made from, how often you use them, the activities you perform in them, etc. However, with proper care, some orthotics may last many years—3 to 5 years is typical for rigid or semi-rigid models, and some can last even longer. Custom orthotics can also frequently be refurbished or repaired, rather than completely replaced.
