What Makes A Great Orthotic? The Inventor of Sole Supports Explains

If you've been searching for the best custom orthotics or looking for a custom orthotics podiatrist, you're not alone. With so many over-the-counter insoles and custom options available, it can be hard to know which ones actually make a difference.

To help answer that question, Dr. Joel Foster, podiatrist in Lee's Summit, Missouri, sat down with Dr. Robert Glaser, the inventor of Sole Supports custom orthotics, to discuss what makes these orthotics different, and why proper foot support can improve more than just foot pain.

A Different Approach to Custom Orthotics

According to Dr. Glaser, many traditional orthotics and store-bought inserts are designed to cushion the foot after it has already collapsed into an inefficient position. While they may provide temporary comfort, they often don't correct the way the foot functions.

As Dr. Glaser explains, "When you raise the arch, the foot locks in position for propulsion." In contrast, when the arch collapses, the foot becomes less efficient and more prone to instability.

Sole Supports are designed to support the foot in its optimal position throughout each step, helping improve foot mechanics while still allowing natural movement and shock absorption.

Dr. Glaser's unique background in both engineering and podiatry inspired him to rethink how orthotics should work. Rather than simply changing the shape of an insert, he focused on what he considers the true innovation: calibration.

Instead of using the same materials for every patient, Sole Supports orthotics are customized based on factors like body weight, foot flexibility, arch height, and activity level. As Dr. Glaser puts it, "The only thing I really invented was calibration." The goal is to provide the right amount of support for each individual—not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Why the Casting Process Matters

Unlike traditional methods that may capture the foot in a collapsed position, Sole Supports uses a standardized casting technique that positions the foot in its ideal functional posture before the orthotic is made.

This creates greater consistency and helps the finished orthotic better support the foot during walking and everyday activities.

Your Feet Affect Your Entire Body

Your feet are the foundation of your body. In Dr. Glaser's words, "The foot is your interface with the world—it's the foundation of the building." When that foundation isn't functioning properly, the effects can travel up the kinetic chain, contributing to discomfort in the:

Feet

Ankles

Knees

Hips

Lower back

According to Dr. Glaser, supporting the foot correctly can influence the body's alignment all the way up the chain, helping improve overall movement and posture.

At Dr. Joel Foster's office, many patients come in seeking relief from foot pain but are pleasantly surprised to notice improvements in their knees, hips, or lower back after wearing properly fitted custom orthotics.

Custom Orthotics vs. Store-Bought Insoles

Over-the-counter inserts can provide extra cushioning, but they're designed to fit a wide range of feet. Custom orthotics are made specifically for your foot structure and walking mechanics, helping address the underlying cause of pain rather than simply adding padding.

For people with ongoing foot pain, heel pain, plantar fasciitis, or other biomechanical issues, consulting a plantar fasciitis podiatrist can help determine whether custom orthotics are appropriate. Sole Support orthotics are recommended for anyone who spends long hours on their feet, enjoys walking or running, works on hard surfaces, or wants better support for everyday activities. Many high-level athletes have also worn these orthotics for improved stability and performance.

Custom Orthotics for Only $375

If you're struggling with foot pain or recurring discomfort, custom orthotics may be worth exploring. At our Lee’s Summit office, Dr. Joel Foster offers what he describes as the highest quality orthotics at the most affordable cost in Kansas City. For only $375, our orthotics help patients move more comfortably and support the health of their feet—and often their knees, hips, and back as well.

As Dr. Glaser reminds patients, "This will affect every step you take for the rest of your life." Investing in properly fitted custom orthotics isn't just about relieving today's pain—it's about supporting your body's foundation for years to come.

If you'd like to learn more, watch our full interview with Dr. Robert Glaser and Dr. Joel Foster or schedule an appointment to see if custom orthotics are the right solution for you.

How International Surgical Training Helps Improve Patient Care in Kansas City

Dr. Joel Foster recently traveled to Nottingham, United Kingdom, to attend the European Foot & Ankle Society (EFAS) Minimally Invasive Surgery Conference. The event brought together foot and ankle specialists from around the world, including France, Germany, Egypt, Poland, and many other countries.

As medicine continues to evolve, staying current with the latest surgical techniques, technology, and treatment approaches helps ensure patients receive the highest level of care possible. Conferences like EFAS provide a unique opportunity for physicians to learn directly from leading experts, exchange ideas, and discuss the future of foot and ankle medicine.

For Dr. Foster, the trip was an opportunity to gain a broader perspective on how foot and ankle surgeons around the world approach the same conditions they treat every day. When asked why it was important to travel internationally for the conference, Dr. Foster explained, "I am always looking for opportunities to step out of my comfort zone and look at things from a different perspective. I wanted to see how foot and ankle surgeons around the world approach the conditions that we are all treating every day."

Beyond the educational sessions, Dr. Foster found tremendous value in the relationships built throughout the conference. He noted that one of the most rewarding aspects of the event was the opportunity "not only to discuss and learn surgical treatments, but also to build relationships with colleagues around the world."

The primary focus of the conference was the continued evolution of minimally invasive foot and ankle procedures. These techniques are designed to reduce tissue disruption, minimize postoperative discomfort, and potentially shorten recovery times compared to traditional surgical approaches.

Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Foster said one of his biggest takeaways was seeing how closely aligned many surgeons are in their treatment philosophies. "The biggest takeaway is that much of what we are doing is very similar. This builds a lot of confidence that minimally invasive surgeons in the United States and around the world are all operating with similar approaches." He also appreciated the opportunity to share his own experience and techniques with surgeons who are earlier in their transition from traditional open surgery to minimally invasive procedures.

In addition to attending lectures and surgical discussions, Dr. Foster had the opportunity to learn firsthand how physicians from different countries approach common foot and ankle conditions. Exposure to a variety of perspectives helps identify new ideas, refine existing techniques, and ensure patients benefit from the most current thinking in the field.

One of the highlights of the conference was working directly with Dr. Marc Elkaim, a French foot and ankle surgeon, during a cadaver lab session. "I was privileged to meet and work one-on-one in the cadaver lab with Dr. Marc Elkaim," Dr. Foster said. "I was able to learn a bunion surgery technique that he has perfected and has been performing for the last 16 years."

While conferences like EFAS are valuable learning experiences for physicians, the ultimate goal is always to improve patient care. Dr. Foster explained that many of the lessons he plans to implement involve subtle refinements rather than dramatic changes. "The majority of the things I will apply are mostly some subtle changes to hand position and angle of bone cuts in certain conditions. Sometimes it is these small changes that can make a big difference for patients by minimizing unnecessary trauma to the body and reducing postoperative pain."

Dr. Foster remains committed to lifelong learning and regularly attends educational events throughout the year. By combining experience, modern technology, and ongoing education, our goal is to provide patients with the most effective foot and ankle care possible.

40 Years of Pain: Gone in One Visit with Dr. Joel Foster

By Mike Ralston

For 40 years, Lee’s Summit resident Kathy P. dealt with a corn on her left little toe. During that time, she visited seven to eight podiatrists who provided various recommendations for her issue. A corn is a small area of hardened, dead skin that develops when the foot experiences repeated friction or pressure.

“About every three months, I would go to the podiatrist to get the corn shaved off, so it would quit hurting so bad. I couldn't go three months without my little toe hurting from rubbing on my shoe. However, after three months of dancing, her little toe hurt so badly that she could barely walk, let alone dance.

Kathy is active in the community as a member of several General Federation of Women's Clubs. The organization is the oldest and largest women's international volunteer organization. Through the clubs, she volunteers several times a month. When volunteering for Harvesters Food Bank, Giving the Basics, and Happy Bottoms, her painful corn made it miserable for her to stand and assemble snacks, hygiene products, disposable diapers, and other essential items for these organizations.

“Because my toe hurt so bad, I would often ask for a volunteer job where I could sit down,” adds Kathy.

Navigating Options for Corn Removal

The first podiatrist Kathy met with 40 years ago recommended surgery to remove the last bone in her little toe. She opted for that surgery on both feet because she had a corn on both little toes at the time. It resolved the issue on her right foot, but not her left foot.

Several years later, a podiatrist performed an x-ray of her foot and noticed that the bone had grown back, and the corn returned on her left little toe. The podiatrist suggested surgery to remove the end of the little toe.

“One wanted to perform surgery where he would cut off the end of my little toe. Because I wouldn't have a toenail on that little toe, I didn't want that surgery.”

The next podiatrist suggested she release the tendon in the fourth and fifth toe on her left foot so the toes would lie flat instead of at an angle. Another podiatrist said that option wouldn't work and she recommended drilling into the bone on her little toe and smoothing the bone to keep the toe from rubbing on her shoe and causing the corn.

At the urging of a friend, Kathy scheduled an appointment with Lee’s Summit foot and ankle specialist Joel Foster, DPM. Dr. Foster is trained in all aspects of foot and ankle care. He provides conservative treatment, and performs innovative minimally invasive surgical procedures.

“When I visited with Dr. Foster, I told him about these various treatment options from other podiatrists. He said he didn’t need to cut off the end of my toe, but rather a combination of what the last two podiatrists recommended,” adds Kathy.

Flexor Tenotomy Procedure

After a comprehensive surgical consultation with Kathy, Dr. Foster performed a minimally invasive tenotomy on her 4th and 5th toe. He also performed a procedure to smooth off the part of the bone in her little toe that was rubbing on her shoe.

“Dr. Foster did a great job. He explained everything that would happen during surgery and answered all my questions.”

Post-Operative Recovery, Patient Recommendation

Kathy definitely recommends this minimally invasive procedure to others. She experienced little pain, and only took a few Tylenol the first few days after surgery.

“I no longer have a corn on my left little toe and my shoes fit well. I'm free from pain!”

“The recovery went well. I had to keep my foot dry for two weeks. I purchased the cast protector from Dr. Foster and it did a great job of keeping my foot dry.

At her two-week check-up, Dr. Foster demonstrated for Kathy how to tape her toes to keep them at the correct angle until her next follow-up appointment.

“I was most impressed with the fact that after surgery, he gave me his card with his cell phone number. He told me to call him any time of the day or night during the weekend if I had any problems after surgery. That has never happened with other surgeries I have had. I always had to call an answering service that would call the surgeon on-call. That gave me peace of mind to know that Dr. Foster was just a phone call away,” adds Kathy.

Why Choose Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive surgical techniques offer significant advantages over traditional open surgeries, including:

Lower complication risks. Smaller incisions mean less opportunity for infections and post-surgery wound-healing complications.

Less post-operative pain and scarring. I had to make sure my heel was all the way back in my shoe with the shoe tied tight enough so that there was no rubbing on the widest part of my foot. I previously had trouble with the skin being ripped off of that area,” said Haefele.

“Many foot and ankle conditions respond well to conservative treatment in the early stages. When padding or footwear modifications no longer provide relief, surgical correction becomes the only permanent solution for restoring proper foot function and eliminating chronic pain,” adds Dr. Foster.

Dr. Foster’s expertise encompasses the full spectrum of structural deformities and chronic conditions. Minimally invasive bunion correction surgery is one of the most common procedures Dr. Foster performs in his office and at Saint Luke’s East Hospital.

His minimally invasive approach corrects deformities like bunions, while preserving joint function and avoiding the stiffness associated with traditional procedures that require joint fusion and permanent hardware.

Surgical Consultation Allows Patients to Make an Informed Decision

Patients typically delay foot surgery due to concerns about recovery time, surgical complications or cost. By offering a complimentary comprehensive surgical consultation, Dr. Foster takes the time to focus on each patient’s issues and goals, while addressing any questions they may have about specific procedures, recovery time and payment options.

“Not everyone needs surgery. It’s important to help people understand the non-surgical and surgical options available, so they can make the decision that’s right for them,” adds Dr. Foster.

Dr. Foster’s surgical consultation also includes in-office weight bearing imaging of the foot and ankle. He is one of a select few podiatrists in the country to utilize pedCAT technology in his practice. The unique 3D imaging scanner provides enhanced diagnostic accuracy, improved efficiency and improved surgical outcomes for complex conditions, like fractures, arthritis and deformity.

“I had an initial complimentary surgical consultation with Dr. Foster, which included X-rays of both feet. Dr. Foster explained the results with me and there was no pressure to proceed with surgery,” adds Haefele.

Bunion Correction, Osteotomy Procedures

Haefele opted for outpatient surgery at St. Luke's East Hospital. Dr. Foster performed a bunion correction surgery with a double 1st ray osteotomy. This procedure involves two small incisions, one in the first metatarsal and one in the bone of the toe itself to realign the bones, improve stability and reduce recurrence.

Minimally invasive bunion correction surgery requires only three tiny poke hole incisions. This means no sutures are required and there is no permanent fixation. There are no screws, pins or hardware that will remain in your foot once the healing is completed. Minimally invasive surgery offers many benefits to the patient, including faster recovery, lower risk of infection, less scarring, and oftentimes lower cost.

“Bunion correction surgery is highly successful and most people are able to make a complete recovery, provided they follow their post-surgical instructions carefully. The complication rate with this procedure is so much lower than traditional open surgery,” adds Dr. Foster.

Better Results, Quicker Recovery

Managing pain and swelling after a bunion correction and osteotomy requires a combination of rest, elevation and icing. It’s critical to stay ahead of the pain by taking prescribed medications on schedule and minimizing weight-bearing activity.

“It was painful the evening after surgery, but not quite as acute the next day. I only took two pain pills on surgery day and two the following day. After that I took Tylenol, as the pain was much milder,” adds Haefele.

“I progressed right along as expected. Through the recovery process I kept my foot elevated, as directed by Dr. Foster. I wore the post-op shoe until the six week mark and then transitioned to a regular shoe.”

It’s so rewarding to see the satisfaction of each patient after minimally invasive surgery,” adds Dr. Foster.

Betty’s lifestyle has definitely improved after the surgery, and she would definitely recommend Dr. Foster and this surgery to others. In addition to the bunion correction surgery, she had six laser treatments post-surgery. The new dual wavelength MiS laser generates 14x more power than Dr. Foster’s previous model, which significantly accelerates tissue repair and reduces inflammation between joints.

“I can wear my shoes without worrying about my left shoe being so tight. Don't Let Foot Pain Ruin Your Trip

The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is already bringing excitement to Kansas City. Between stadium events, fan experiences, concerts, restaurants, and exploring the city, visitors will spend far more time on their feet than they expect.

The problem? Foot pain, blisters, swelling, and heel pain can quickly turn an unforgettable trip into a miserable experience.

Whether you’re traveling from another state or another country, these Kansas City World Cup walking tips can help you stay comfortable and enjoy every minute of your trip.

Expect More Walking Than You Think

One of the biggest surprises for sports fans attending major events is just how much walking is involved.

Between:

Parking lots

Public transportation

Stadium ramps and stairs

Fan festivals

Downtown events

Airport travel

Hotel walking

…it’s not unusual for fans to easily walk 5–10+ miles per day during their World Cup trip.

If you already deal with:

Plantar fasciitis

Flat feet

Bunions

Achilles pain

Neuropathy

Arthritis

Heel pain

…the added walking can flare symptoms up quickly.

Best Shoes for World Cup Travel

The wrong shoes are one of the fastest ways to ruin a stadium day.

When choosing the best shoes for World Cup travel, look for:

Stable midfoot support

Cushioning for long walking days

A wide toe box

Heel stability

Avoid:

Flat fashion sneakers

Old, worn-out shoes

Sandals with no support

Minimalist shoes if you’re not used to them

A common mistake travelers make is bringing brand-new shoes for the trip. Break your shoes in before arriving in Kansas City.

If you’re looking for a great shoe store while visiting Kansas City, check out Running Well Store. Their staff is specially trained to help fit you in the best shoes for your feet, walking style, and activity level.

If you already wear orthotics, definitely bring them on your trip. A lot of people leave them at home and regret it after long days of walking. And if you need extra support while you’re in Kansas City, we offer heat-molded orthotics in-office that can be customized and ready the same day.

Blister Prevention for Soccer Fans

Blisters are incredibly common during large sporting events because fans suddenly increase their walking activity.

Simple blister prevention tips:

Wear moisture-wicking socks

Change socks during long days

Use anti-friction balm or blister pads

Keep feet dry

Don’t wear brand-new shoes

Carefully trim thick calluses before traveling

One of the biggest mistakes people make is ignoring a “hot spot.” If you feel rubbing or irritation, don’t just push through it all day — that’s how you end up with a major blister or wound. Change socks, adjust your shoes, and use blister protection early.

And if you’re visiting Kansas City for the World Cup and something does flare up, we can get people in quickly for blister care, callus treatment, or foot pain so they can enjoy the rest of their trip comfortably.

Swollen Feet From Flights and Travel

Long flights and car rides commonly cause foot and ankle swelling.

Travel swelling happens because:

You sit for long periods

Circulation slows down

Feet are in a dependent position

Sodium and dehydration can worsen fluid retention

Travel tips to reduce swelling:

Walk periodically during flights

Stretch your calves often

Stay hydrated

Wear compression socks

Elevate feet at the hotel when possible

Many travelers notice their shoes fitting tighter after flying. Plan ahead and avoid overly snug footwear.

Plantar Fasciitis Travel Tips

Heel pain and plantar fasciitis can become significantly worse during vacations packed with walking.

A few things that help:

Stretch your calves before getting out of bed

Never walk barefoot in the hotel room

Use supportive shoes immediately in the morning

Ice your heels after long walking days

Alternate activity when possible

If you know you’re prone to heel pain, preparing before the trip can make a huge difference.

Local Podiatrist Recommendations in Kansas City

One thing many visitors don’t realize is that foot pain from excessive walking and travel can often be treated quickly — especially when addressed early.

Our direct-care podiatry office in Kansas City offers:

Same-week and often same-day appointments

Fast diagnosis and treatment

Same-day customizable heat-molded orthotics

Advanced therapies for heel pain, swelling, tendon pain, and overuse injuries

One of the biggest advantages for travelers is that we can fit patients with heat-molded orthotics for only $60, and patients can walk out with them the same day.

Whether it’s:

Blisters

Arch pain

Heel pain

Swollen feet

Tendon irritation

Ball-of-foot pain

Foot fatigue from excessive walking

…our office can often help people get comfortable again quickly so they can get back to enjoying their trip.

Don’t Spend Your Kansas City World Cup Experience Sitting in Pain

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will bring incredible energy to Kansas City, and the last thing you want is foot pain slowing you down.

If foot pain starts affecting your trip while you’re in town, our direct-care podiatry office offers same-week — and often same-day — appointments designed to help visitors get relief quickly so they can get back to the games, restaurants, events, and everything Kansas City has to offer.

Minimally Invasive vs. Traditional Foot and Ankle Surgery: What You Need to Know

If you have ongoing foot or ankle pain, the idea of surgery can feel overwhelming. Many people imagine large cuts, a long recovery, and a lot of pain afterward. The good news is that surgery has come a long way. Smaller Scars

Smaller incisions mean smaller scars, which are often barely visible once healed.

Why More Patients Are Choosing Minimally Invasive Surgery

New technology and improved techniques have made minimally invasive surgery safer and more effective than ever. For many common foot and ankle problems—like bunions, hammertoes, and flat feet—it can provide results that are just as good or better than traditional surgery.

The biggest difference? An easier recovery.

More patients today are choosing options that help them heal faster and get back to their normal lives sooner.

After dealing with chronic left foot pain for over a decade, this patient reached a breaking point when a long-standing bunion rapidly worsened, making it difficult to wear shoes or stay on her feet for extended periods. She had tried numerous over-the-counter solutions—including inserts, cushions, and bunion correctors—but none provided relief, and many actually made the pain worse. Feeling discouraged and out of options, she had nearly accepted the discomfort as permanent.

Everything changed when she learned about Dr. Foster’s minimally invasive approach. Unlike traditional surgery, the procedure involved small incisions, local anesthesia, and no permanent hardware. The experience was smooth and far less intimidating than expected—she remained awake, experienced minimal discomfort, and was guided through each step of the process. With a temporary pin removed after a few weeks and no lasting implants, the procedure offered a more comfortable, patient-friendly path to long-term relief.

Double Board-Certified Expertise You Can Trust

When considering foot and ankle surgery, choosing the right specialist is just as important as choosing the right procedure.

With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Joel Foster is a double board-certified podiatric surgeon serving the Kansas City metro area. You need a solution.

Many patients are told to return week after week, month after month, with no clear end in sight. That cycle can be frustrating, time-consuming, discouraging, and expensive.

Our goal isn’t to keep you coming back for ongoing wound care. Our goal is to help you heal — and keep the wound from coming back.

Wound care should not be about maintenance. It should be about resolution.

Why Some Wounds Don’t Heal

In many cases, a wound fails to resolve because the underlying cause hasn’t been addressed.

Most chronic foot wounds are caused by excess pressure in a specific area. If that pressure isn’t reduced, the wound simply cannot heal — no matter how carefully it’s cleaned or dressed.

You can treat the surface repeatedly, but if the mechanical problem remains, the wound remains.

A Different Approach: Correct the Cause

This is where minimally invasive procedures can make a powerful difference.

Using tiny 2–3 mm incisions, we can reduce the pressure contributing to the wound. These procedures:

Are performed under local anesthetic

Require no sutures

Do not require stopping blood thinners

Carry very low risk

Are appropriate for many diabetic and high-risk patients

In fact, many patients are told they “shouldn’t have surgery” because they are diabetic. But an open, exposed wound often carries far greater risk than a carefully controlled, minimally invasive procedure designed to eliminate the source of the problem.

When we correct the underlying cause, healing often accelerates dramatically.

We frequently see improvement in days — and resolution in weeks rather than months.

Stop Managing the Wound. Start Solving It.

If you have:

A wound that won’t heal

A wound that keeps returning

Ongoing need for repeated debridement

No clear long-term plan for resolution

There may be a better option.

Instead of focusing on months of repeated care, we focus on identifying the cause, correcting it, and helping you move forward.

Mark Denby Reclaims Normal Life Following MIS Success

By Mike Ralston

In October 2025, Mark Denby was admitted to St. Luke’s East Hospital for a significant foot infection on his right big toe. He was having issues walking and the pain was being felt throughout his entire right leg. Mark tried other treatment options, including cleaning the wound using over-the-counter ointments, but it only delayed the inevitable.

“I met Mark at the hospital and continued his care at my office. He was dealing with a significant infection, so we were able to treat it with antibiotics and good wound care. However, he was continuing to endure quite a bit of pressure under his great toe, and there was an area on the ball of his foot that concerned me with ulcers returning,” adds Dr. Joel Foster.

After a thorough consultation with Mark to assess his overall foot structure, as well as discussing his limitations and treatment options, Dr. Foster scheduled minimally invasive surgery (MIS) procedures to prevent the affected areas from becoming calluses and wounds, and to relieve the pain that he was having.

Akin Osteotomy, Tendon Release Procedures

One of the first issues Dr. Foster addressed was the pressure Mark had under his big toe. The joint didn't bend up very well, and there was a lot of resistance from the flexor tendon.

“I performed a slight release to lengthen the flexor tendon and to allow the big toe to set-up. I also made a tiny incision (diameter of a ballpoint pen) and made a little cut in the bone to elevate it, which eliminated the pressure completely,” adds Dr. Foster.

The other issue was the pressure below the fourth metatarsal bone. Mark experienced pain and Dr. Foster was concerned about an ulcer or wound developing there, as there were clear signs of significant pressure and developing pressure wounds in this area of his foot.

“Similarly, I made a tiny incision and cut in that bone to allow it to elevate. Our risk is that all the pressure would be transferred to the other metatarsal bones. So I made a little cut in each one of the other bones allowing all of those bones to elevate the same amount.”

In the end, Dr. Foster was able to eliminate all the pressure through MIS techniques. No sutures, no pins, no screws. He simply splinted the toes in the correct position and allowed them to heal naturally.

“Remarkably, there was no real pain during the entire procedure. Dr. Foster did an amazing job,” adds Denby.

Quick Recovery Process, Professional Staff

The recovery process has been good for Mark, even faster than he thought it would.

“It is very rewarding to be able not only to heal a wound, but to actually solve the underlying pressure problem in an effort to prevent my patients from having the wound return in the future,” adds Dr. Foster.

“Dr. Foster and his staff are so caring and friendly. They really helped me get to where I needed to be and to walk normal again.”

“My lifestyle has definitely improved. I do a lot of volunteer work with the Scouts, and I’m back to hiking, camping and living a normal life,” adds Denby.

Mark would definitely recommend these MIS procedures to others, if they are experiencing the same issues.

“Absolutely, speak with Dr. Foster and he will get you going in the right direction. I enjoyed working with Dr. Foster and his staff. It might be odd to say, but I miss my appointment times. Smaller incisions mean less opportunity for undesirable microorganisms to enter your body.

Less post-operative pain and scarring. Smaller incisions also mean less pain and swelling after the operation and often a better aesthetic result as well.

More convenient. Most minimally invasive procedures can be performed outpatient in our office. You won’t have to worry about a hospital stay, eating after midnight the night before, or many of the inconveniences related to most other surgeries.

Faster treatment. In some cases, you’re out the door just 45 minutes after your procedure, and most people can return to work and other normal activities faster than with traditional surgery.

Lower cost. The majority of minimally invasive surgical procedures can be done in our in office surgical room rather than making a trip to the hospital. Unfortunately, these items didn’t correct the problem.

Realizing that surgery was the only option, Laura searched from the preferred providers list on her insurance carrier’s website. She diligently reviewed their background, experience and reviews, and scoured the websites of those providers.

“The video on Dr. Foster’s website about minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for bunions caught my attention. It made so much more sense to actually go in and realign the bones than to just shave off the part of the bone that was sticking out. The fact that Dr. Foster had been doing this procedure for many years and was one of the most experienced minimally-invasive foot surgeons in the Kansas City area really sealed the deal for me,” adds Laura.

“Unfortunately, most severe bunions that are getting in the way of full, healthy living and cannot be managed conservatively will most likely need surgical correction in order to restore foot function,” adds Dr. Joel Foster.

“It’s become so uncommon to find a doctor who can take the time to listen to you, and to educate you on your condition. Because Dr. Foster did, I had no reservations and felt I could trust him completely. It’s rare, but so reassuring and encouraging when it happens,” adds Laura.

The Benefits of Bunion Correction Surgery

Bunion correction surgery requires only three tiny poke hole incisions. This means no sutures are required and there is no permanent fixation. There are no screws, pins or hardware that will remain in your foot once the healing is completed. You can walk right away in a shoe or a boot because the incision is so small.

In Laura’s case, Dr. Foster performed a bunion correction surgery with a double first ray osteotomy. This procedure involves two small incisions in the first metatarsal to realign the bone, improve stability and reduce recurrence.

“Bunion correction surgery is highly successful on average and most people are able to make a complete recovery, provided they follow their post-surgical instructions carefully.”

“The complication rate with this procedure is so much lower than traditional open surgery,” adds Dr. Foster.

“I opted to have the procedure done at the hospital with general anesthesia rather than with local anesthesia in Dr. Foster’s office. It was painful, but it was manageable with the medications. If I had it to do over again, I would choose the surgery option at Dr. Foster’s office,” adds Laura.

Laura’s MIS Procedure Results, Recovery Process

At nearly 12 weeks since the bunion correction surgery, Laura is now walking in her regular shoes without pain and without a limp.

Initially, she had to wear an orthotic boot, even for short distances. She gradually progressed to regular household activity wearing the boot, and ultimately to her shoe and her regular routine.

“My foot and leg were weakened from the inactivity, so I was careful to walk only on fairly even ground. I bought a walking pad from my sister, and have worked on that nearly daily to get my strength back so that I’m ready when spring finally arrives!”

Laura’s lifestyle has definitely improved since the surgery. After hosting Christmas for her immediate family, she has been busy canning and baking, and was able to clear her pollinator garden in preparation for seeding this spring.

“On a couple of the nicer days my husband and I have been able to walk the trail around our property with no pain!”

Without hesitation, Laura added that she would recommend Dr. Foster to others.

“Dr. Foster and his staff are the BEST! Professional, but friendly, and very caring. Dr. Foster answered all my questions and took the time to explain everything clearly – I learned a lot!”

“Carrie orchestrated and coordinated with my insurance and the hospital, and kept me updated on all of it. From the front desk, to the X-ray room, to checking out, nothing but kindness and professionalism,” adds Laura.

Why Choose Dr. Joel Foster for Your Foot Surgery

Joel Foster, DPM, is one of the most experienced minimally invasive foot surgeons in the Greater Kansas City area, having successfully performed thousands of minimally invasive procedures.

He is a double board-certified surgeon, earning certification in Foot Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS), and is among fewer than 40 doctors nationwide to achieve board certification in Minimally Invasive Foot and Ankle Surgery by the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP).

Dr. Foster is offering free surgical consultations for a limited time! Click here to complete the form and schedule your consultation today!

Lee's Summit Resident on Road to Recovery After Successful MIS Procedures

By Mike Ralston

Lee’s Summit resident, Todd H., had been dealing with a bunion and hammertoes on his left foot for several years. What works well for maximizing profits in business doesn’t always work for patients who need time, attention, and individualized care. So what does private equity ownership really mean for your healthcare experience, and why are independent practices becoming harder to find and more important than ever? While many foot conditions respond well to conservative treatments at first, there often comes a point when padding, orthotics, physical therapy, and footwear changes are no longer enough. When chronic pain persists, a minimally invasive foot surgery podiatrist can provide advanced surgical options designed to address the underlying condition with less downtime and a potentially faster recovery.

Surgery is rarely our first recommendation. We always begin with non-surgical options such as custom orthotics, therapeutic laser treatments, and other conservative care. When those options are no longer effective, minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery has become the preferred choice for many patients in the Kansas City region.

“I knew about 15 minutes into my visit with Dr. Foster that this was the right choice for me—and two months later, I knew I had made a wise decision.”

For Miriam Buchanan, bunion pain had slowly taken over the activities she loved most—gardening, walking, and keeping up with her grandchildren. This “hammered” shape can lead to pressure points, corns, calluses, and even open wounds—especially when the toe rubs against shoes.

While conservative treatments like roomy shoes or orthotics can reduce pain and slow progression, they cannot reverse the deformity. The only way to permanently fix a hammertoe is to correct the structural problem, which is where a minimally invasive foot surgery podiatrist can help. This modern approach offers faster healing, less discomfort, and a long-term solution to both the deformity and the complications it causes.

If you're noticing changes in toe shape, ongoing pain, or signs of skin damage, it's time to consider treatment. A Minimally Invasive Solution for Flat Feet

EOTTS, or Extra-Osseous TaloTarsal Stabilization, is a minimally invasive procedure designed to restore natural foot alignment and arch support by stabilizing the rearfoot.

How It Works:

The procedure involves placing a small titanium stent into a naturally occurring space in the foot known as the sinus tarsi, located between the talus (ankle bone) and calcaneus (heel bone).

This stent acts as a spacer that prevents the talus from shifting forward and downward — the root cause of a collapsed arch — while still allowing normal foot movement. As a result, patients experience improved foot alignment, better arch support, and reduced strain on muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Importantly, the procedure does not involve cutting bone, transferring tendons, or using screws. It's a straightforward correction performed through a very small incision.

EOTTS vs. Other Flat Foot Treatments

Many flat foot treatments either provide temporary relief or require invasive surgery. Here’s how EOTTS compares:

1. A Wide Toe Box

Your toes need room to spread naturally with every step. Shoes with a narrow or pointed toe box can crowd your toes, leading to bunions, corns, and other painful issues. Look for a shoe with enough space so that you can fit at least a finger’s width between your longest toe and the tip of the shoe.

2. A Stable Heel (Neutral Support)

The back of your shoe should feel firm and supportive. A stable heel counter holds your foot in place and prevents unwanted side-to-side motion, which reduces the risk of ankle sprains and overuse injuries. Avoid shoes with soft, collapsible heels that can lead to instability.

3. A Supportive Midfoot

Check the shoe’s midfoot by trying to bend it. Shoes should flex slightly at the forefoot (where your toes naturally bend) but should not fold in half at the arch. A supportive midfoot helps maintain proper alignment, decreases strain on your arch, and reduces the likelihood of plantar fasciitis or heel pain.

4. Even Wear Patterns

Flip your shoes over and look at the soles. Excessive wear on the inside (medial) or outside (lateral) edge of the shoe can indicate that your feet are rolling inward or outward too much. This imbalance may signal the need for orthotics or further evaluation by a foot specialist.

Needing Additional Support?

Even with the right shoes, some foot pain stems from underlying structural or biomechanical problems. Kansas City podiatrist, Dr. Joel Foster, is proud to offer advanced options when our patients need extra support. One such option is EPAT (Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology), a cutting-edge therapy that can significantly relieve pain and promote faster healing for certain acute or chronic conditions.

Contact Us

Table of Contents

Why Are Pro Athletes Using EPAT?

What Exactly Does EPAT Do?

Our Special Heel Pain Relief Package

Is EPAT Right for You?

Why Are Pro Athletes Using EPAT?

Athletes in the NFL, NBA, and MLB rely on their feet every single day. They can’t afford lengthy downtime or partial recoveries. That’s why many turn to EPAT—a technology proven to help accelerate recovery, reduce pain, and restore full function, all without surgery or medication.

EPAT works by delivering high-energy pressure waves to the injured area. These waves create a controlled micro-disruption in the tissue, triggering the body’s natural healing response. The result? Faster tissue regeneration, improved blood flow, and pain relief that can last.

What Exactly Does EPAT Do?

Although sometimes referred to as "shockwave therapy," EPAT doesn’t use electrical shocks. Instead, it uses mechanical pressure waves to:

Boost cellular metabolism so your body repairs itself faster

Increase circulation to deliver healing nutrients and growth factors

Break up scar tissue or calcium build-up that might be blocking your recovery

Relieve pain both instantly and over the long term by addressing the root cause

And best of all—it’s non-invasive, requires no anesthesia, and involves zero downtime.

We believe advanced treatment should be accessible. That’s why we offer EPAT therapy at an affordable price of $150 per treatment (per location) or $400 for a month of treatments—a great value for long-lasting heel pain relief. It uses gentle electrical signals to help “wake up” damaged nerves and improve how they function.

Unlike medications that only cover up symptoms, Neurogenx helps treat the root of the problem—the damaged or irritated nerves themselves.

Neurogenx has shown success in treating a wide range of neuropathy symptoms, including:

Chronic nerve pain

Numbness

Tingling

Burning sensations

Cramping

Hypersensitivity

Balance issues

In fact, clinical results show that over 87% of patients treated with Neurogenx report major improvement or complete relief from their symptoms.

How Does It Work?

During each session, small adhesive patches (like stickers) are placed on your skin near the areas where you feel symptoms. These patches send a safe, painless electronic signal deep into the affected nerves that closely matches the body’s natural signals. Nerve cells carry electricity about 60% better than other types of tissue. Since energy naturally follows the easiest path, the signal is drawn directly to the nerves, where it can have the most impact. The signal then helps to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and encourage healing in the nerves.

Each session takes about 45 to 50 minutes, and most patients come in once or twice a week. Many patients begin experiencing noticeable relief in as little as 3 to 4 visits!

Maximized Healing: Neurogenx and MLS Laser Combination

MLS Laser Therapy uses a unique, dual-wavelength, light energy system to jumpstart your body’s natural healing process. This FDA-approved therapy uses a robotic head to precisely target the treatment area and deliver the exact energy dosage each patient needs.

Dr. Foster finds that combining Neurogenx with MLS laser treatment leads to faster relief and more effective results, as the two therapies work together to enhance nerve healing, reduce inflammation, and improve overall treatment outcomes.

Supplements Available at our Office:

Nitric Oxide is designed to improve your cardiovascular health by boosting your body's nitric oxide levels to help improve blood flow.
